Low AMH & Poor Ovarian Reserve
Understanding Low AMH & Ovarian Reserve
The amount of AMH indicates the amount of eggs available. This may be a point of concern if the amount of AMH in the body is low. A low AMH level doesn't mean pregnancy isn't possible. This test is conducted in consideration of the age of the woman and the results of the ultrasound test. While an older woman may need assistance in getting pregnant, a younger woman may get pregnant naturally despite a low amount of AMH. AMH is a guide, not a final verdict.
Causes & Impact on Fertility
However, chronological age remains the most common cause of reduced ovarian reserve. Past ovarian surgeries, chemotherapy, genetic causes, smoking, and autoimmune diseases are some of the other possible causes. Reduced ovarian reserve may lead to poor response to ovarian stimulation and reduced available eggs for IVF cycles. Egg quality is related to chronological age more than to AMH levels.
Early recognition allows better planning rather than delayed action.
Evaluation & Fertility Treatment Options
- Hormone tests and pelvic ultrasound to evaluate reproductive health
- AMH and follicle count are used to evaluate ovarian reserve
- A hysterosalpingogram to assess the fallopian tubes' patency
- Analysis of the semen for a comprehensive evaluation of the partner
- Counseling for planned intercourse during ovulation induction
- Intrauterine insemination in the presence of minor male and cervical factors
- IVF/ICSI in difficult cases after the failure of less sophisticated techniques
Fertility Planning & Alternative Options
However, if the ovarian reserve is compromised, timing plays a crucial role. Some couples may decide to undergo early IVF treatment in order to establish the quality of embryos in their respective age groups. Couples may also freeze their embryos in order to have a flexible plan. Donor Egg IVF may also be considered with high success rates in cases of poor ovarian reserve. All decisions are taken after mutual discussion and understanding of the situation.
